About Phosphate
Phosphate is one of the three macronutrients required for plant growth, along with nitrogen and potassium. When fertilizers list amounts of NPK, they are referring to the amount of Nitrogen (N), Phosphate (P205), and Potassium (K2O).
Phosphate is the oxidized form of phosphorus, meaning it is phosphorus plus oxygen. A phosphate compound consists of two phosphorus molecules and five oxygen molecules and is expressed as P2O5. When phosphate fertilizers are added to the soil, only a portion of the phosphate is immediately absorbed by the plant. The remainder is held by soil particles. When plants require more phosphate, the soil particles release more back into the soil solution. This slow-release leads to stronger crop production over the years.

Row Crops
The production of row crops often involves continuous cropping and removal of plant materials. Consequently, soils can become low in nutrients including phosphorus. Without enough phosphorus, plants struggle to photosynthesize, transfer energy, and fully develop roots and stalks.
Before applying rock phosphate, conduct a soil test to determine how much material is required. Depending on the need, rock phosphate can be applied via multiple methods. Broadcasting can be used to add phosphorus to the soil either before seeding or during crop growth.

Trees are reliant phosphorus for processes including energy transfer, root development, and photosynthesis. Without sufficient amounts of phosphorus, trees will exhibit discolored leaves and stunted growth.
